Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson today unveiled the Executive's plans to mark the 300th anniversary of the 1707 Union of the Parliaments.

Highlights of the year-long commemoration include:

  • Primary and secondary schools will participate through an education project led by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland
  • National Museums Scotland will stage an exhibition of Union-related objects and documents
  • National Galleries of Scotland will hold an exhibition of portraits of people associated with the Union

"The Union of the Parliaments was a pivotal moment in Scottish history, which has left an indelible mark on our country.

"It is important that this anniversary is recognised and commemorated by the Executive and its national institutions. The events announced today offer something for everyone.

"I hope the programme of events inform and stimulate debate about the legacy left by the Act of Union 1707."

The commemoration will also feature a series of seminars, book launches and a debate by the National Library of Scotland titled 'The Road to 1707' exploring the events, causes and debates surrounding Scotland's Union with England. These will take place from May 2007.
