Mackerel fishing quotas

25/10/2006

An agreement which was reached in Edinburgh late last night has secured an increase of over 13 per cent in mackerel quotas for next year.

The Fisheries Minister Ross Finnie said:

"I warmly welcome this agreement. The increase reflects in part the healthy state of the mackerel stocks and the effectiveness of the controls now in place on this fishery. It also reflects the substantial efforts we have devoted this year to engaging with the European Commission and others to secure the best possible outcome from the important external fisheries negotiations. Mackerel is Scotland's most valuable fishery and this increase will be of real importance to the Scottish Fishing industry."
