Minister comments on GDP growth

25/10/2006

Figures published today show that Scotland's economy grew robustly both over the latest quarter and over the year to 2006 quarter two.

The 2006 quarter two GDP figures show that Scottish GDP rose by 0.6 per cent compared with the previous quarter, and by 2.2 per cent over the year, above Scotland's long term (1975-2005) annual average rate of 1.8 per cent.

Commenting on the figures, Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen, who is currently promoting Scottish business in the Far East, said:

"The robust growth in the second quarter of 2006 is to be welcomed. Annual GDP growth has been over two per cent for seven successive quarters now.

"The track record of strength and stability in the Scottish economy has delivered more jobs for the people of Scotland over the past year than ever before. Unemployment is at its lowest rate since records began.

"Looking ahead the outlook for the Scottish economy remains positive. We are clearly focused on our key aims of ensuring the conditions are right for economic growth."
