Commonweath Games voters

The first group of people who will have the final say on Glasgow's Bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games have today arrived in Scotland.

The voters from the Commonwealth Games European Region are in the city to hear about Glasgow's plans for the Games, tour facilities and to meet key people from the Scottish government, City Council and the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland.

Welcoming them to Glasgow, Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson said:

"I am delighted to welcome the delegates from the Commonwealth Games European Region to Glasgow and to Scotland. They have a busy three days ahead of them, but I know that they will be impressed by Glasgow and the tremendous support that the Bid has generated right across the country.

"Winning these Games means so much to Scotland. They will inspire thousands of young people to take up the challenge of sport. They will make sure that our fantastic country is given global exposure like never before. And they will give ordinary Scots the chance to be a part of something that they will never forget.

"This is the first group of voters who will visit the city over the next year or so. We are determined to make sure that they leave knowing that Glasgow is the ideal host for the 2014 Commonwealth Games."

The voters are in Scotland From Thursday to Sunday of this week. They are all are from the European Region of the Commonwealth Games Federation. This is made up of Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Malta, Cyprus and Gibraltar.

On Thursday and Friday, the voters will tour Glasgow's existing sports and entertainment facilities as well as be presented with formal plans for the Athletes Village, Media Centre and other new sports and entertainment facilities.

As well as the tour, the voters will be given two formal presentations on Glasgow's plans for the Bid. This will include planned transport and infrastructure improvements in the city and beyond.
