Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport Patricia Ferguson today announced the reappointments of Mr Marc Ellington, Professor Richard Thomson, and Dr Ruth Wishart to the National Galleries of Scotland.

Marc Ellington is an independent communications, marketing, and tourism consultant. He has recently retired from the Heritage Lottery Fund committee. In addition he was Project Director fro the Scottish Traditional Skills Training Centre. He holds no other Ministerial appointments.

Richard Thomson is Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh, and was also responsible for setting up the Visual Arts Research Institute, Edinburgh. Before that, he taught at the University of Manchester where he was also a Member of the Board of the Cornerhouse, the Manchester contemporary art and cinema complex. He has extensive experience in the organisation of international loan exhibitions. He holds no other Ministerial appointment.

Ruth Wishart is a freelance journalist and broadcaster who writes a weekly column for The Herald and presents programmes on contemporary ethics for BBC Radio Scotland. She is Chair of Theatre Cryptic and of the Dewar Arts Awards and was formerly chair of the CCA in Glasgow and a Governor of the Glasgow School of Art. She holds no other ministerial appointments

These reappointments will be for four years and run from 1 October 2006 to 30 September 2010.

The posts are part-time and are not remunerated. Board members are expected to prepare for and attend approximately six Board meetings a year and may be involved in additional meetings and events.

The National Galleries of Scotland is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) with a Board appointed by, and accountable to, Scottish Ministers. The National Heritage (Scotland) Act 1985 provides for Scottish Ministers to appoint members to the Board of Trustees.

These Ministerial public appointment were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Mr Marc Ellington, Professor Richard Thomson, and Dr Ruth Wishart have not been involved in any political activity.
