NHS staff and teachers' pensions

03/10/2006

Public consultation on proposals to reform the Scottish NHS and teachers' pension schemes starts today.

The Scottish Public Pensions Agency consulted on a number of options for reforms to the teachers and NHS pension schemes in 2004 and 2005.

The responses indicated a very strong preference for the retention of a final salary pension scheme and for existing scheme members to retain their current main pension benefits.

Minister for Finance and Public Service Reform Tom McCabe said:

"The proposals published today would retain a normal pension age of 60 for all existing members of each scheme and retain a final salary pension for both existing and new NHS workers and teachers.

"At the same time the proposals will ensure that the pension schemes are sustainable in the long term, generating significant savings compared to current arrangements."

The closing date for responses on both consultations is January 5, 2007.

Copies of each consultation paper will be sent to all Scottish NHS and teachers employers and trade unions.
