Improving facilities for young people

13/09/2006

Youth centres could be spruced up and projects for young people may be in line for new equipment thanks to a one-off £1 million grant scheme.

Youth organisations have until October 20 to apply for a share of the Youth Work Capital Fund to improve facilities which are available to young people from all over Scotland.

The cash is available for capital projects - anything from renovation and refurbishment to new buildings, furniture or equipment - and has to be spent by the end of March.

Education Minister Peter Peacock said:

"We need to open up youth work opportunities for young people to make the most of their talents and interests. This money will help by allowing youth organisations to improve their buildings and invest in better equipment.

"We know that young people's experiences outside the classroom can enrich their lives in many ways. By investing in youth projects, we are also investing in young people's futures and helping to build a better tomorrow."

Youthlink Scotland will administer the grant scheme on behalf of the Executive. Their chairman, Peter McNamara, said:

"We are delighted to see this capital investment in the youth work sector. We are sure it will improve the capacity and infrastructure of youth work organisations, and we look forward to receiving proposals."

Carol Downie, Chief Executive of Youth Scotland, said:

"This capital fund will be welcomed by youth groups and will provide increased opportunities for young people across Scotland."
