Monitoring report published for National Planning Framework

13/09/2006

A new document is published today to stimulate debate on the key projects for Scotland's long-term development.

The Monitoring Report for Scotland's First National Planning Framework presents detailed factual commentary and analysis of a range of issues.

Deputy Communities Minister Johann Lamont said:

"This is a key part of our reforms to modernise our planning system - the most radical overhaul in 60 years. These reforms will make it much more efficient to help our economy grow and engage communities from the outset.

"For the first time, there will be the opportunity for a national debate about Scotland's long-term spatial development and the key projects required to support it.

"There has been almost universal support for enhancing the role of the National Planning Framework and putting it on a statutory basis.

"The Monitoring Report highlights the progress being made in promoting economic growth, community regeneration and environmental quality and the challenges posed by our commitments on climate change and sustainable development.

"We want the National Planning Framework to promote a national debate about Scotland's long-term development. The Monitoring Report is an important part of the evidence base which will help to inform that debate."

The report will also assist in the preparation of the second National Planning Framework which the Executive intends to publish in 2008. It draws on the latest available data from a wide range of sources to highlight trends and policy developments which have a bearing on Scotland's long-term development.
