Determined to Broadcast

05/09/2006

Thousands of young Scots will get tuned into broadcasting thanks to a newroadshow launched today.

Pupils at St Andrew's Secondary School in Glasgow boarded the Determined to Broadcast bus to try their hand at creating their very own show under the guidance of radio professionals.

Determined to Broadcast is scheduled to visit hundreds of schools across Scotland this year, creating an exciting vocational learning experience for young people.

Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Nicol Stephen said:

"This new initiative is going to create interest right across Scotland. The Determined to Broadcast roadshow is a great example of business people giving young people in secondary schools a really exciting enterprise experience.

"We want to ensure that all of Scotland's young people have the skills needed to prepare them fully for the world of work. This programme goes a long way to building confidence, ambition and an entrepreneurial outlook among young people.

"Through our Determined to Succeed strategy we have made available £86 million to support enterprise education in Scotland.

"We now support vocational learning opportunities for young people in all employment sectors. Our target of 2000 school business partnerships has now been achieved. All industrial sectors are now involved."

Determined to Broadcast is delivered by a team of broadcast professionals in a customised double-decker bus, fully equipped with a Synergy Broadcast Centre, which functions as a mobile radio studio and production facility.

The pioneering project is funded by the Executive's Determined to Succeed strategy for enterprise in education and developed in partnership with Radio Clyde's Cash for Kids, Radio Clyde, the Hunter Foundation, Stagecoach and other supporters.

Determined to Broadcast is further supported by Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the audiovisual industries, who have worked with industry partner Neon Productions to develop and deliver the initiative's training programme.

John Collins, Determined to Broadcast Programme Director, said: "When I wanted to work in radio there was no clear route into the industry - now there is. Determined to Broadcast gives young people solid experience in a realistic programme making environment, as well as giving them advice on how to take their first steps in broadcasting. Through this project we're really hoping to find tomorrow's top talent."

The state-of-the-art, interactive roadshow has already received the backing of high profile radio and TV celebrities, such as Radio Clyde's Ross King, XFM Scotland's Heather Suttie and GMTV presenter Jenni Falconer.
