Forth Valley NHS Board

Health Minister Andy Kerr today announced the re-appointment of Mr Ian Mullen as Chair to Forth Valley NHS Board.

Mr Kerr said:

"I am very pleased to announce this re-appointment. Mr Mullen is extremely committed to public service and has demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues being faced within NHS Forth Valley. His wealth of management and Board room experience, along with his strong leadership, strategic planning and analytical skills, will be extremely valuable during a period of significant transition. I look forward to working together with him in the vital task of improving the health of the people of Scotland."

A pharmacist by profession, Mr Mullen practised as a self- employed community pharmacist between 1971 and 1996 and chaired the Scottish Pharmaceutical General Council from 1986- 1988.

Mr Mullen has held non-executive appointments in the NHS in Scotland for a number of years. He previously chaired two NHS Trusts and chaired the Scottish NHS Chairmen's Group between 1998 and 2002. Mr Mullen was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to the NHS in Scotland.

He has been chair of NHS Forth Valley since 2002, leading the Board during the development of its Healthcare Strategy involving the provision of a new £300m acute hospital for Forth Valley.

Mr Mullen's appointment will be for four years and will run from September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2010.

This post is part time with a time commitment of around three days per week for which the annual remuneration is £27,795.

Forth Valley NHS Board is responsible for the strategic planning of health services and the development of measures to improve the health of the community in the Ayrshire and Arran region.

The Ministerial appointment was made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, Mr Mullen has not been involved in any political activity.
