Well designed buildings deliver economic benefits

10/08/2006

A major new study has revealed that well-designed buildings can attract investment, create jobs, and improve staff performance.

The study, commissioned by the Executive, reviewed over 100 research reports compiled over the past decade by world-leading academics and professional architectural institutions from the UK, Europe, Canada and New Zealand.

The main findings highlighted the economic and health benefits associated with well designed buildings. Significant social and environmental benefits were also identified.

The study was conducted by leading research consultants, Morris Hargreaves McIntyre.

Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson welcomed the report. She said:

"We all want to live and work in buildings that are attractive and convenient to use and which we enjoy being in."

"I hope this report can act as a catalyst that will encourage innovative, creative and user-friendly architectural design that will improve the lives of communities throughout Scotland."

Much evidence exists on the social, economic or cultural impact of architecture and design, but there is little consistent research. These findings draw on practical and case-study evidence.
