Culture Minister puts festival dates in diary

Edinburgh will experience an explosion of cultural activity this summer attracting thousands of visitors from home and abroad, Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson said today.

Speaking as Edinburgh's festival season kicks-off this week, the Minister said that Scotland should take pride in its world class festivals.

Ms Ferguson said:

"Edinburgh's reputation for hosting festivals is world-renowned, famed both for their diversity and excellence.

"The festivals provide something for everyone, and I hope they prove popular with as many Scottish people and international visitors as possible."

"The artistic delights on offer will enliven the city between now and the end of August."

The Minister will attend the following performances. Diary permitting, more engagements will be added in the coming weeks.

  • July 28 - Starbucks Jazz and Blues Festival - Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue - Queens Hall.
  • August 13 - Edinburgh International Festival - The Opening Concert: Elektra by Strauss - Usher Hall
  • August 14 - Edinburgh International Book Festival - Meet the Author: Roy Hattersley - Charlotte Square
  • August 15 - Edinburgh International Festival Fringe - Lucy Porter: The Good Life - Pleasance Courtyard.
  • August 16 - Edinburgh International Festival Fringe - Craig Hill: Kilty Pleasures - The Assembly Rooms.
  • August 20- Edinburgh International Festival - Scottish Ballet - Edinburgh Playhouse.
  • August 22 - Edinburgh International Festival - Mazeppa - Festival Theatre.
  • August 23 - Edinburgh International Book Festival - Brian Taylor: Donald Dewar lecture - Charlotte Square.
  • August 26 - Edinburgh International Film Festival Awards Ceremony - timing and venue to be confirmed.

In addition, diary permitting, the Minister will attend Fringe performances in a private capacity.
