Scotland in frame for olympic training camps
23/07/2006
Scottish sporting facilities are being asked to register their interest in hosting pre-Games training camps for teams preparing for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, it was announced today.
London 2012 organisers are producing a guide that will showcase the best sporting facilities that the UK has to offer to Olympic and Paralympic teams across the globe.
The guide will feature those sporting venues that can provide a complete training environment with support services.
Scotland's national sports agency, sportscotland, will co-ordinate applications from Scottish sports facilities that wish to apply to be part of the guide. Closing date for applications is the end of January 2007.
The guide will be issued in summer of 2008.
Speaking today before attending a London 2012 Roadshow event at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson said:
"Hosting training camps in Scotland is one of the real benefits springing from the 2012 Games.
"We will offer a warm welcome to Olympians and Paralympians and show the world Scotland is a confident country with a vibrant sporting and dynamic cultural life."
Charles Allen, Chairman of London's Nations & Regions Group said:
"The 2012 Organising Committee wants to encourage as many international teams as possible to use the UK as a base for their pre-Games training prior to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"This guide will contain the best of our facilities right across the UK and give teams and individual athletes a great selection of world class facilities and support services."
From Monday Scottish sports facilities can find out more about the application process by visiting the London 2012 website at www.London2012/trainingcamps
They must complete their online submission, which will then be automatically sent to sportscotland, by January 31, 2007.
