Truck hits the road to help tackle antisocial behaviour

18/07/2006

A roadshow designed to raise awareness of the resources available to tackle antisocial behaviour kicked off its national tour in Greenock today.

The roadshow is set to visit 15 local authority areas over the summer and is being supported by a national advertising campaign. Ministers from a number of portfolios will support the tour over the next three weeks.

The tour aims to increase awareness of the guidance and resources on offer to residents affected by antisocial behaviour. Community wardens and police officers will also be available to give advice in person.

The main focal point of the roadshow is a truck where specialist staff will be available to use state-of-the-art technology to answer queries from members of the public.

Minister for Parliamentary Business Margaret Curran was in Greenock for the launch. She said:

"Antisocial behaviour legislation has given local agencies a range of powers, supported by substantial resources, to help them tackle the problem and bring respite to those communities in Scotland which suffer from the unruly actions of others.

"We expect all of the measures provided to be used where appropriate to tackle local problems and we make no apology for that. Local communities themselves are also looking closely at how local agencies are responding to their real and legitimate concerns.

"Antisocial behaviour is a serious issue and things won't change overnight but everyone should have someone to turn to locally for help and advice. The fact more ASBOs are being granted suggests they are becoming increasingly recognised as a vital tool in the fight against crime in our communities."

Ms Curran also visited Greenock Police Station to lend support to the ongoing 'Shop a Knife Carrier Campaign' and saw a demonstration of the use of handheld metal detectors.

Over the next three weeks the Antisocial Behaviour Roadshow will visit:

  • Inverclyde
  • West Dunbartonshire
  • Fife
  • Edinburgh
  • West Lothian
  • Inverness
  • Aberdeen
  • Dundee
  • Stirling
  • South Lanarkshire
