Olympics roadshow rolls into Scotland

19/07/2006

A roadshow will visit towns and cities across Scotland this weekend to give an update about preparations for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A specially-branded bus - bearing images of some of the UK's most famous athletes and internationally-known locations - will carry information telling local people what the Games can mean for them and how they can get involved.

The roadshow will visit Edinburgh, Perth, Stirling, Aberdeen and Glasgow and Dumfries.

Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson will meet the bus when it arrives in Aberdeen, Dumfries and Hampden Park, Glasgow.

Ms Ferguson said:

"The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will help us deliver our ambitions for sport in Scotland.

"The roadshow will update communities across Scotland about how the London 2012 Games will affect them and their communities."

"I hope the London Games inspires Scots to wider participation in sport and physical activity, which benefits health, develops self-confidence and improves quality of life."

Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, added:

"The great thing about the Olympic and Paralympic Games is that pretty much everyone wants to be involved in some way.

"The national roadshow will help to ensure that regional cities and businesses feel part of the 2012 experience and provide them with the information about our plans and the opportunities to be part of the world's biggest sporting event."

The roadshow bus will have representatives from London 2012, the Executive and Olympic athletes past and present who will bring with them the latest news on progress in the last 12 months and future plans.

A Scottish Steering Group - comprising representatives from organisations including Scottish Enterprise, VisitScotland, sportscotland, EventScotland, the Scottish Arts Council, COSLA and BBC Scotland, Volunteer Development Scotland, CBI Scotland and the Scottish Chambers of Commerce - has been set up to maximise benefits to Scotland accruing from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
