Measuring progress on delivering sustainable development

05/07/2006

The progress to date of the Executive's achievements in sustainable development in Scotland and a new set of indicators which will be used to measure further progress were published today.

The indicators have been refreshed and strengthened to reflect the key outcomes in the sustainable development strategy Choosing our Future, including new measures on carbon emissions and the uptake of eco-schools.

The Implementation Plan and Progress Report shows the achievements made since the Sustainable Development strategy was published in December 2005. These include publishing the Climate Change Programme and new arrangements in place to offset and reduce carbon emissions resulting from Executive business travel.

The Minister for Environment Ross Finnie said:

"The revised set of indicators will allow us to measure Scotland's progress and will capture the different dimensions of sustainable development.

"With this new set we will measure progress against a wide set of indicators that reflect our social, environmental and economic goals.

"The indicators, implementation plan and quarterly progress reports will enable us to monitor and drive progress towards a more sustainable future for the people of Scotland, in line with the goals in our sustainable development strategy, Choosing our Future."

The Executive has reported annually against a balanced set of indicators in 'Meeting the Needs' for the last three years. This refresh of the indicator set aligns the indicators more closely to key outcomes in Scotland's sustainable development strategy and the joint UK Framework for Sustainable Development.
