Drug education drive begins
05/06/2006
A roadshow aimed at informing parents and young people of the risks associated with drug misuse begins its tour in Paisley town centre today.
The 'Informing Parents' truck will tour 10 towns and cities throughout June and will act as a call to action for families to talk more openly about the harm drugs can cause.
The roadshow will be supported by Know the Score campaign materials, including information on the dangers of cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and volatile substance abuse.
Deputy Justice Minister Hugh Henry said:
"Drug misuse can shatter the lives of individuals and families, and threaten communities. We need to discourage young people from dabbling with illegal substances. We need to explain to them that there is no such thing as safe kicks with drugs.
"Prevention is always better than cure and parents and other family members can make a real difference. They are an important and respected source of guidance and advice for many young people. This roadshow will help more people access the information they need to have a clear and compelling influence on the young people in their lives. With information and advice they can help to turn more younbg people away from the misery of drug abuse.
"Many parents may think that their kids don't listen to them but what parents do and say has an effect. By inviting them into informed discussion, families can help to ensure that Scotland's young people are armed with a real understanding of how to stay safe."
