World's first storytelling centre
01/06/2006
The world's first purpose built storytelling centre, promoting the rich traditions of storytelling across Scotland, opened today in Edinburgh.
The £3.5m Scottish Storytelling Centre on the Royal Mile will link with a national network of storytellers, involving all age groups and the diverse cultures of modern Scotland.
Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson said:
"This new centre is a mark of the importance of storytelling to Scotland's culture, our education and our entertainment. It is an indication of the growing revival of this ancient art.
"The emergence of the Scottish Storytelling Centre is another sign of new confidence in Scottish culture and its international importance."
Director the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Dr Donald Smith, said:
"We are thrilled to be launching our events programme from our fantastic new house of stories".
Richard Holloway, Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council, added:
"The Storytelling Centre is a unique institution that provides Edinburgh with a valuable resource where people can enjoy and take part in storytelling and other artforms. The Scottish Arts Council is proud of its investment of £1.3 million of Lottery funding in this exciting, modern building."
The Centre is a joint initiative between the Scottish Storytelling Forum and The Church of Scotland.
Funding has been provided by SAC Lottery Fund, Edinburgh Council, Scottish Enterprise, and by charitable donations. SAC grant was £1.3 million of the £3.5 million development costs.
