Lollipop Person of the Year
18/04/2006
Scotland's Lollipop Person of the Year was named today as Mrs Moira Stallard of Clarkston Primary School in Airdrie.
The award from Kwik-Fit Insuranced has become an annual event since it was launched in 2003 to mark the 50th anniversary of the introduction of school crossing patrols.
Transport Minister Tavish Scott said lollipop women and men deserved recognition for the work they did on road safety because they were much appreciated by their local communities.
He continued:
"The Executive has set a target to halve the number of child deaths and serious injuries in road accidents by 2010 from the average for the period 1994-98.
"Excellent progress has been made. In 2004 the number of children killed or seriously injured in Scotland was 55 per cent below the baseline, exceeding the target.
"Road Safet Scotland is implementing a strategy for road safety education and the Executive funds free membership of the Children's Traffic Club which offers traing to all three-year-olds in Scotland."
