Reception for Scotland's sporting heroes
12/04/2006
First Minister Jack McConnell tonight paid tribute to Scotland's sporting heroes as he hosted a reception at Stirling Castle to honour their outstanding performances on the world stage.
Mr McConnell said Scotland's athletes had inspired the whole of the country with their performances at the Commonwealth Games, Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, and that they deserve special recognition for their recent achievements.
The First Minister said:
"Scotland's athletes have been absolutely outstanding. Their determination and team spirit has inspired the whole of Scotland and improved Scotland's international reputation. They deserve every accolade they receive for their performances.
"Tonight's reception is an ideal opportunity to pay a fitting tribute to the sportsmen and women who've captured our imagination in recent weeks. It also gives us the chance to pay tribute to the many team coaches and officials who have worked so hard over the years to make Scotland's athletes the success they are. They have all been tremendous.
"As Glasgow's bid to stage the 2014 Commonwealth Games gains momentum the most impressive team performance in our history can only work in Scotland's favour."
