Fireworks injuries survey

31/03/2006

Latest figures on the injuries caused by fireworks in Scotland between October 11 and Novembver 12 last year were released today.

Deputy Minister for Finance and Public Service Reform George Lyon, said:

"Fireworks can only be enjoyed if they are handled in a responsible and safe way.

"These figures show, overall, the number of injuries caused by fireworks in Scotland remains low but there has been a slight increase on last year's figures with around 90 people injured.

"Any injury caused by fireworks is unnecessary and unavoidable and we are working hard to drive down injuries, and to tackle the anti-social use of fireworks.

"The UK Government and the Executive recently introduced new laws and regulations to tackle the dangerous and irresponsible use of fireworks and by continuing to work together with local authorities and manufacturers we are determined to drive down these figures, protect local communities and see fireworks being used in a fun, sensible and safe way.
