£100 million spending plans approved

31/03/2006

The Executive has today approved local authorities' spending plans involving a share of £100 million Quality of Life funding.

The latest allocation follows the £180 million councils have already received to support local initiatives in 2003-06.

Minister for Finance and Public Sector Reform Tom McCabe said:

"This funding is all about making life better for people and improving the quality of life in their communities.

"I am delighted to approve the spending plans submitted by local authorities. Local communities, local issues and local services are at the heart of Scotland. We can now push on with tackling these issues and bringing improvements to the services and environments which affect people's quality of life.

"Local authorities' plans reflect both the local and national priorities of the Executive to improve the local environment and improve community wellbeing."

"Over the past three years, this funding has been used by local authorities and their partners to help community regeneration, tackle anti-social behaviour, increase opportunities for children and young people, improve joint health services and services for older people and make great environmental improvements.

"Children and young people across Scotland, have been motivated to make healthier lifestyle choices through healthy eating schemes in schools and better access to and provision of sport and leisure facilities, such as skateparks and free swim initiatives.

"The funding has also helped councils to improve their local environment by tackling anti-social behaviour and focusing on neighbourhood safety. Projects have included CCTV installation, improvement works to roads and pavements, additional lighting in neighbourhoods and anti-litter initiatives.

"Local authorities and their partners have proven to spend this money effectively and efficiently, resulting in better communities and a greater quality of life for people across Scotland. I look forward to seeing a new round of innovative projects to emerge from this funding and the lasting benefits that they will bring."
