Economic growth in the Borders

27/03/2006

A new strategy to grow the Borders economy through the promotion of lifelong learning was launched today.

During a visit to Newtown St Boswells, Deputy First Minister and Enterprise Minister Nicol Stephen said that the Scottish Borders Lifelong Learning Strategy will help unlock the potential of local individuals and businesses.

He said:

"I want to ensure that every Scot has the confidence, the enterprise and the skills to play a full part in our economy. Learning is absolutely key to this.

"That is why the Executive has in place a Lifelong Learning Strategy, ensuring that people have opportunities to gain new skills and new knowledge. Learning is something that everyone can benefit from and enjoy.

"I am delighted that the Borders has taken the initiative and produced its own lifelong learning strategy to identify and address particular local needs.

"Encouraging local people to develop a passion for learning and be the best they can will help create thriving communities and a stronger Borders economy."

he Scottish Borders Lifelong Learning Strategy has been developed by the Borders Learning Partnership. This includes Scottish Borders Council, Borders College, NHS Borders, Scottish Enterprise Borders and Communities Scotland.
