Scotland strikes gold in Australia
16/03/2006
Scotland's first gold medal winners at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne have been congratulated by the First Minister Jack McConnell.
Caitlin McClatchey, 20, won the 200m freestyle, while 24-year-old David Carry also won gold in the 400m freestyle.
Mr McConnell, in Australia to support the Scottish team and promote Glasgow's bid to host the 2014 Games, said they had got Scotland off to an outstanding start.
"Congratulations to Caitlin and David. Hard work and talent has won through. I hope they inspire all their team mates and the next generation of Scottish swimmers."
The FM also praised cyclist Chris Hoy, a former Commonwealth and Olympic gold medallist, who took the bronze medal in the 1km time trial. He said:
"Chris will be disappointed but Scotland is not disappointed in him. Congratulations on his bronze and best of luck to the rest of the Scottish team for the competition."
