Quarrying communities
03/03/2006
Environment Minister Ross Finnie today allocated £725,853 from the Community Environmental Renewal Scheme (CERS) to 37 communities across Scotland.
Grants ranging from £5,000 to £50,000 will fund a variety of the projects to transform the environment in communities affected by past or current quarrying.
Projects include the refurbishment of a former mill to provide a museum facility on Mull and installation of artificial Sand Martin nesting walls in Renfrewshire. Communities in Dumfries and Galloway, Fife, the Highlands and the Borders, among others, will receive funding.
Mr Finnie said:
"These grants demonstrate our commitment to delivering improvements in, access to, and enjoyment of the environment in all parts of Scotland.
"This scheme helps to fund a wide range of community based projects. Communities across Scotland have proposed these projects in order to enhance their environment and quality of life. "It demonstrates that former and current industrial activity can support and sit side-by-side with environmental enhancements and access to green spaces."
The scheme is being administered by Forward Scotland, on behalf of the Executive, using funds from the Aggregates Levy. There will be one further round in this 2004-07 scheme.
