Companies 'score' on new funding
02/03/2006
Nine Scottish companies have received grant funding in the last year to work on a series of innovative projects.
Totalling £301,211, the awards will help fund new projects in biotechnology, software and the construction industry, as well as the development of realistic-looking electric fires.
Deputy Enterprise Minister Allan Wilson said:
"I am delighted to be able to unveil this year's beneficiaries from the SCORE programme, which aims to increase the level of research and development carried out in Scotland.
"We now have supported 20 projects to the tune of £649,505 since the first award was announced in July 2004.
"The assisted projects are widely varied, from a new sports supplement to help athletes both before and after exercise, to the development of an ultrasonic tracking system for pipeline "pigs" for use in the oil and gas industry.
"This reflects the diversity of industry and research across Scotland. Each of these projects will also strengthen the links between business and universities in this country.
"I look forward to seeing how these projects develop over the coming months and years."
SCORE stands for the SME Collaborative Research Programme.
The nine projects to benefit from this year's funding are:
- Extreme Nutrition (Edinburgh) will work with Heriot Watt on an 18 month project to develop a pre and post exercise drink for athletes - £21,500
- Online Electronics Ltd (Aberdeen) is working with the University of Strathclyde on a 12 month project to develop an ultrasonic pipeline pig tracking system - £35,000
- Edinburgh Instruments Ltd (Edinburgh) is working with the University of Dundee on a 12 month project to develop a fluorescence lifetime and polarisation platform for biochemical assays - £35,000
- Glycologic Ltd (Glasgow) is working with Glasgow Caledonian University to develop a prebiotic as biotherapeutic agent by administering it alone or in conjunction with a probiotic organism in the form of a pessary or cream for the control and treatment of infections in the female genital tract - £35,000.
- Applecross Properties Ltd (Edinburgh) is working with the University of Strathclyde on an 18 month project to develop a lean process to reduce wastage in the construction industry - £35,000
- Genesis Properties (Scotland) Ltd is working with Sheffield Hallam University, on a 12 month project to develop a radio-controlled electromechanical locking system for domestic use - £35,000
- Sciencesoft Ltd (Glasgow) is working with the University of Glasgow to develop a software tool incorporating mathematical and statistical methods to improve oil recovery - £35,000
- Virtual Well Ltd (Aberdeen) is developing a software tool with Robert Gordon University by embedding hydraulics modelling algorithms - £35,000
- The JRG group Ltd (Irvine) will work with the University of Paisley to develop a realistic three dimensional flame effect for use in electric fires - £34,711
SCORE announced in December 2003 by the First Minister is aimed at improving the level of R&D undertaken by Scottish SMEs by helping to fund collaborations between industry and the science base.
The first SCORE project was announced in June 2004.
