Highlands and Islands Airports (HIAL)

Transport Minister Tavish Scott today announced the appointment of two new members to the Board of Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL).
The new members are:
Mrs Linda (Linn) Phipps - lives in both West Yorkshire and Lewis and is active in Gaelic culture. She is a Management Consultant and was previously Chair of a large NHS Primary Care Trust. She is now a Non-Executive Director in an NHS Mental Health Trust. She has extensive experience in both executive and non-executive capacities in local government and public transport, including the rail industry.
Dr Charles A (Alistair) Goodlad - is a resident of Shetland and has been involved in a number of local private businesses. He has been very active in local government, transport and economic development circles within the Highlands and Islands, including the Shetland Islands Council, the Shetland Islands Amenity Trust, the Shetland Development Trust and Lerwick Port Authority.
These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Neither Mrs Phipps nor Dr Goodlad has any political affiliation.
These appointments will be for three years and will run from March 1, 2006 to February 28, 2009. These posts are part-time and attract a remuneration of £ 6,732 for a time commitment of two days per month. Neither of the above appointees hold any other Ministerial public appointments.
HIAL is a company wholly owned by the Scottish Ministers and is sponsored by the Scottish Executive through the Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning Department's Transport Group. The company's purpose is to maintain the safe operation of its airports, develop air services in the region and to support economic and social development.
HIAL operates 10 airports in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland; more airports than any other civil operator in the UK. The airports are located at: Barra; Benbecula; Campbeltown; Islay; Inverness; Kirkwall; Stornoway; Sumburgh; Tiree and Wick. In 2004/05 annual passenger volumes ranged from 6,000 at Tiree to 565,000 at Inverness.
