National Theatre's opening night
24/02/2006
Scotland's first National Theatre begins performances this weekend at 10 different locations across the country.
New pieces of theatre, based on the theme of Home, will be played out in forests, ferries, shopfronts, factories, museums, concert halls, nissan huts, tenements and tower blocks.
The opening nights are in Aberdeen, Caithness, Dumfries, Dundee, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Shetland and Stornoway. All are free.
The National Theatre has no building of its own - just an administrative base in Glasgow. It will tour Scotland and beyond, making use of venues as appropriate.
NTS artistic director and chief executive Vicky Featherstone said:
"For over 100 years, the theatre community in Scotland has been campaigning for a National Theatre. Now it is finally happening."
The creations of NTS was announced by Scottish Ministers in September 2003.
