Cosla backs Commonwealth Games bid

COSLA, the body representing Scottish local authorities, has backed the bid to bring the Commonwealth Games to Glasgow in 2014.
Council leaders were today given a Commonwealth Games 2014 presentation by Sport Minister Patricia Ferguson, Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Louise Martin, Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland.
The Minister encouraged council staff, their colleagues, family and friends to show their support for Scotland's bid.
Ms Ferguson said:
"Winning the race to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 will inspire thousands of young people to take up and excel at sport.
"The support of our local authorities will ensure the whole country can share the social and economic benefits, providing a lasting legacy for the nation."
Councillor Pat Watters, COSLA President said:
"We had a very good presentation from the Minister, the leader of Glasgow City Council and Louise Martin.
"All authorities represented, not only wished them well, but were keen to get right behind the bid on behalf of the whole of Scotland."
The Commonwealth Games Federation will announce the name of the successful host city in Sri Lanka in November 2007.
