Growth in Scotland's GDP

25/01/2006

The latest GDP figures released today show that Scotland's economy grew both over the year and last quarter.

The figures show that Scottish GDP rose by 0.5 per cent compared with the previous quarter, and by 1.7 per cent over the past year. During the same quarter, GDP in the UK as a whole rose by 0.4 per cent and by 1.7 per cent over the year.

Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen said:

"While it is good to see our GDP continue to grow over both the quarter and the year, the decline in the production sector continues to be a real concern.

"It's important to note, however, that Scotland's service sector, which accounts for over two thirds of the Scottish economy, continues to exhibit solid growth.

"Within the service sector there are numerous strong performers - with financial services, business services, hotels & catering, and retail all performing well.

"Tough challenges are still there, but we remain clearly focused on our key aim of ensuring the conditions are right for economic growth."
