Aberdeen teachers updated on education reforms

20/01/2006

Around 20 headteachers from the Aberdeen area today heard about progress of the Executive's 'Ambitious, Excellent Schools' reform programme.

It is just over a year since the comprehensive modernisation programme in Scottish schools was launched.

Deputy Education Minister Robert Brown met the headteachers also visited St Machar Academy in the city to meet pupils and staff.

This visit is one of seven such meetings which have taken place throughout Scotland over the last few weeks.

Mr Brown said:

"We've make real progress over the last year. The programme is ambitious and challenging, but has been met with tremendous enthusiasm by teachers and other education staff across Scotland. I am enormously impressed with their dedication, commitment and skill.

"We have already named our first 20 Schools of Ambition as well as beginning a major review of the curriculum, devolving more power to headteachers and introducing new Skills for Work courses.

"Ambitious Excellent Schools is great news for pupils, teachers and for Scotland as a whole."
