Appointments to Orkney NHS Board

Health Minister Andy Kerr today announced the appointment of Mr Craig Spence and Mrs Liz Middleton as members of Orkney NHS Board.
Craig Spence was born and brought up in Orkney. Upon gaining an Accounting Degree he returned to the Orkney Islands in 1997 and now operates a number of property and tourism related businesses in Orkney, mainland Scotland and overseas. He is a voluntary committee member of a number of local community organisations and a Director of Orkney Enterprise for which he receives no annual remuneration. He is also a member of Orkney Children's Panel for which he receives no annual remuneration.
Liz Middleton has lived and worked in Orkney for thirty years. She was the co-founder of BBC Radio Orkney and worked for Orkney Islands Council Education Department as the training manager at Grainshore Training Centre, where she also specialised in health and safety. She has just retired from the post of local area co-ordinator for Scotland's Health at Work. She does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
Mr Spence's appointment will be for a period of four years from January 16, 2006 to January 31, 2010 and Mrs Middleton's appointment will be for a period of four years from February 1, 2006 to January 31, 2010.
These posts are part time with a time commitment of eight hours per week for which the annual remuneration is £4,670.
Orkney NHS Board is responsible for the strategic planning of health services and the development of measures to improve the health of the community in the Orkney region. To meet those needs it has an annual budget of over £32 million.
These appointments were made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (OCPAS) Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, none of the above appointees have been involved in any political activity.
