Assistant Inspector of Constabulary

06/01/2006

Malcolm Dickson, currently Deputy Chief Constable with Lothian and Borders Police, has been appointed as Assistant Inspector of Constabulary.

Mr Dickson, who will succeed Kenny McInnes, will take up his post on January 24. He has served in various senior positions with Lothian and Borders Police - a force he joined as a constable in 1977 - and has also been as lead staff officer with Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary.

HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary Andrew Brown said:

"Malcolm Dickson is a highly experienced and respected officer with an excellent understanding of policing matters. I look forward to working with him and I know that he will make a positive contribution to the work of the Inspectorate.

"I would also like to thank and pay tribute to the outgoing Assistant Inspector, Kenny McInnes, for all his hard work and support during his time in this post."

Malcolm Dickson joined Lothian and Borders Police in 1977, serving as a constable in Edinburgh. He quickly advanced through the ranks and by 1991 was Chief Inspector in charge of policing operations in East Lothian.

After a spell in various departments at the force's headquarters, he became the officer in charge at Gayfield Square Police Station, Edinburgh and in 1995 he was promoted to Chief Superintendent when he became the lead staff officer at HMIC.

On return to the force he became head of the Personnel and Training Department and later took charge of the Corporate Development Department before once more returning to central Edinburgh to take command of operational policing there.

In 2000 he was appointed Assistant Chief Constable and in 2004, Deputy Chief Constable. In these roles he has carried various national responsibilities, including representing the Association of Chief Police Officers (Scotland) in the development of criminal justice matters.
