Appointment to Scottish Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards

Health Minister Andy Kerr today announced the appointment of Professor John Reid as Medical Director/Vice Chair of the Scottish Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards.
John Reid has been Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Glasgow since 1978 and a Physician with a special interest in high blood pressure and stroke at the Western Infirmary since 1989. From 2000 to 2005 he was Chair of the Acute and Speciality Medicine Services at North Glasgow Division, NHS Greater Glasgow. He is a former Chair of the Biomedical Research Committee of the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Executive Health Department and past President of both the British Hypertension Society and the European Society of Hypertension. He does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
Professor Reid's appointment will be for a period of three years from 1 December 2005 to 31 October 2008.
This post is part time with a time commitment of two days per week for which the annual remuneration is £11,760.
The Scottish Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards advises the Minister for Health and Community Care and Scottish Ministers which specialists engaged in the NHS in Scotland should receive awards for professional distinction.
This Ministerial appointment was made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (OCPAS) Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, Professor Reid has not been involved in any political activity.
