New Year safe drinking message

31/12/2005

Party-goers and New Year revellers were today reminded of the damage that drinking too much can do as Scots prepare to celebrate Hogmanay.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Harry Burns said:

"Hogmanay is a great time to go out and have fun with friends and family. There's nothing wrong with having a drink, as long as it's done safely and not to excess.

"We are all too aware of that binge drinking can lead to major long term health problems.

"It is also important to remember the hard working staff in A&E departments. This is a busy time of year without adding to the workload by treating injuries that are a direct result of too much alcohol.

"If you are going to an outdoor event on Hogmanay wrap up warm and plan in advance how you are getting home.

"I want everyone to enjoy Hogmanay and remind them this can be done without drinking too much.

"Finally one last important message, if you are going to have to drive this New Year - don't drink at all."
