New Aberdeen sports centre unveiled

05/12/2005

A state-of-the-art new sport and fitness centre was today unveiled at Aberdeen College.

The £2 million, 12,000 m 2 purpose built facility will provide sports and games facilities for the college's thousands of students.

Lifelong Learning Minister Nicol Stephen said:

"This new Centre will further add to Aberdeen's reputation as one of Scotland's top colleges. Following the recent opening of a major sports facility at Robert Gordon University, the whole city can now be seen as a top class venue for student sports.

"Sport and fitness activity can contribute hugely to the personal development of students as well help as helping them stay fit and healthy - benefits which the wider community may also be able to take advantage of.

These excellent facilities will allow the College to develop talent, inspire a desire to succeed and help students express themselves and build their teambuilding skills and self-expression. These are vital ingredients of success for a modern student.

"Students will be able to play indoor football, badminton, basketball and a host of other indoor sports and fitness activities. There are also modern changing rooms and a library and IT centre for the entire Gordon campus.

"For the College to be able to meet costs of almost £2 million for this impressive new building entirely from its own resources is a significant achievement.

"I was particularly delighted to be invited to open the new Centre and see first hand the progress being made in this exciting and expanding area."
