Scottish Economic Report 2005

02/12/2005

The latest edition of the Scottish Economic Report is published today.

The report presents a thorough review of recent trends in the Scottish, UK and global economies. In addition, there is an article discussing the economic role of the public sector in Scotland and another article focussing on the enterprise strategy for the Highlands and Islands.

The report has four main parts:

The Scottish Economy: Recent developments and future prospects

Chapter 1 provides an overview of the Scottish economy, summarising recent developments and future prospects. The chapter considers official statistics on the Scottish Economy such as GDP and Labour Market data as well as recent survey evidence. The report also provides some detailed sectoral analysis.

Global, Euro Area and UK economic developments

Chapter 2 demonstrates the linkages between Scotland and the wider economic environment. The first part of the chapter draws upon Scottish Executive research to demonstrate Scotland's extensive trade links with not only the rest of the UK, but also with the wider world. Following this, recent economic developments in the United Kingdom and global economies are covered in some detail.

Implementing the Framework for Economic Development in Scotland

Chapter 3 outlines the Executive's key policies for growing the economy, discussing the key aspects of Building a Better Scotland - Infrastructure Investment Plan: Investing in the Future of Scotland and detailing the links between the Infrastructure Investment Plan and the Framework for Economic Development in Scotland.

This edition also incorporates two articles:

  • Scotland's Public Sector and Economic Growth - considers the size and role of the public sector in Scotland. In particular, it considers its role in fostering economic growth, with reference to the Framework for Economic Development in Scotland, and relevant economic theory.
  • Creating a Smart, Successful Highlands and Islands - The Executive published the refreshed 'Smart Successful Scotland' in November 2004. Following that launch, the HIE Network undertook a strategic review which resulted in A Smart Successful Highlands and Islands, the enterprise strategy for the region, which was published in June 2005. This article considers the results of the review and provides an overview of the strategy.

This is the twelfth edition of the Scottish Economic Report (SER). The SER is published twice a year. The report incorporates data available up to November 15, 2005. The next edition of the SER will be published in mid-2006.
