Clyde shipyard to build new ferry

30/11/2005

The contract to build CalMac's new ferry for its Largs-Cumbrae route was today awarded to Fergusons shipyard.

Transport Minister Tavish Scott said:

"I welcome the awarding of this contract to Fergusons which will provide much needed security for the Port Glasgow yard. It also confirms that a Scottish based company can compete with other EU shipyards and win.

"The many people visiting Cumbrae will now benefit from a new ferry to this popular tourist island."

Fergusons has emerged as the lowest bidder in the tender exercise to build the new ferry which will normally carry 24 cars and up to 250 passengers. It will be due for delivery in the Spring of 2007.

The award of the contract coincides with the planned infrastructure improvements at Largs and will allow the company to move a vessel from the Largs-Cumbrae route to another service on the CalMac ferry network.
