Malawi President arrives in Scotland

The President of Malawi, His Excellency Dr Bingu wa Mutharika, arrived in Scotland today at the beginning of a a five-day visit.

He was welcomed at Bute House by First Minister Jack McConnell.

Tomorrow President Mutharika will address the Scottish Parliament. On Friday he is due to receive an honorary degree from Strathclyde University, and on Saturday, with the FM, he will go to Blantyre in Lanarkshire, the birthplace of David Livingstone who initiated the historic relationship between Scotland and Malawi.

Also on Friday and Saturday the Scotland Malawi Partnership conference will take place in the Parliament to discuss how charities and aid organisations can best help the African country.
