Care home statistics

The results of the March 2005 Scottish Care Homes Census are published today.
Key findings are:
- At March 2005, there were 1,523 care homes registered in Scotland offering 43,700 places
- There were 980 care homes for older people in Scotland. These offered 38,327 places and were occupied by 33,589 residents
- At March 2005, there were 80 fewer care homes for older people than in March 2000 and these provided 753 fewer places than in March 2000. However, the number of places had risen for the fourth consecutive census and was 480 places higher than the March 2003 level
- Registered places in care homes for older people have increased by less than one per cent in the private sector since March 2000 (an increase of 142 places) compared to falls in of 5.9 and 9.5 per cent in the voluntary and local authority/NHS sectors respectively
- 67 per cent of available places in care homes for older people were in rooms with en-suite facilities and 86 per cent of available places were in single rooms
- Following the introduction of the Supporting People initiative, 454 care homes de-registered between March 2002 and March 2005. These are still operational but are now classed as housing support services
