Agriculture and Fisheries Council

20/09/2005

European Member States must do more to meet their existing cod recovery targets before Scottish fishermen are asked to take further stock recovery measures, Fisheries Minister Ross Finnie said today following the Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels.

As part of the UK delegation, Mr Finnie helped outline the UK's position on stock recovery plans and the possibility of introducing tighter control measures.

He said:

"Before agreeing any new stock recovery measures every Member State must provide sound evidence to show it has already met the existing restrictions. "The Scottish whitefish fleet has already reduced its catch by at least the 65 percent target."

Mr Finnie was attending Council on the same day the world's leading fisheries scientists met at the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas in Aberdeen.
