Western Isles NHS Board

Health Minister Andy Kerr today announced the appointment of three new members to Western Isles NHS Board.
Mr
Peter Rintoul retired from local government after about 30 years service. Although only settling on North Uist permanently five years ago, he has had close ties with the Western Isles for some 35 years, his wife being a native of North Uist. He is currently a member of North Uist Community Council and has been its representative at the Health Forum meetings since their inception. His previous experience includes over twenty years service as a Deacon and Elder at his local church where he played an active role on various committees including an extension to the church buildings and outreach projects to the wider community. He does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
Mrs
Anne Ryan is a Lecturer and Student Adviser at Lews Castle College, a member of Bernera Primary School Board and a member of the Local Authority Special Educational Needs Policy Working Group. Her previous experience includes developing learning material for NHS Education Scotland, as a Millenium Award recipient looking at family support in rural Canada and working as a Staff Nurse. She does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
Mrs
Helen Mackenzie is a qualified accountant and is currently the Internal Strategy Coordinator in Chief Executive's Office at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. She is the treasurer of Connect - Women Networking in Lewis and Harris and an is currently Vice Chairperson of Ness Community Council. Mrs Mackenzie was also Chairperson of Disability Lewis until the birth of her son in 2004. She does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
Mr Rintoul's and Mrs Ryan's appointment will be for four years from September 1, 2005 to August 31, 2009. Mrs Mackenzie's appointment will be for three years from October 1, 2005 to September 30, 2008.
It is expected that as a member they will contribute around eight hours per week for which the annual remuneration is £4,170.
Western Isles NHS Board is responsible for the strategic planning of health services and the development of measures to improve the health of the community in the Western Isles region. To meet those needs it has an annual budget of over £56 million.
These Ministerial appointments were made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (OCPAS) Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, none of the above appointees have been involved in any political activity.
