New Teachers ready for new term

12/08/2005

Education Minister Peter Peacock today met the 107 new teachers who are about to start their probationary year in Highland schools.

Mr Peacock and Highland Council's Director of Education Bruce Robertson joined the induction training day for the new recruits who are part of almost 3,000 new teachers across Scotland.

This year's intake of probationers in Highland has almost doubled as part of the Executive's commitment to increase teacher numbers to 53,000 by 2007.

Mr Peacock said:

"Despite the fact that school rolls are falling dramatically, we're increasing the number of teachers in our classroom - and there's an army of new recruits waiting in the wings, ready to bring their skills and expertise into schools.

"These are exciting times for Scottish education - as we embark on the biggest reform programme for a generation - and each and every one of these new teachers has a key role to play to keep our standards of education rising."
