Child health services in Lanarkshire

08/08/2005

Deputy Health Minister Lewis Macdonald visited the Child Health Department at Cumbernauld Central Health Centre today.

The centre offers a wide range of child health clinics including the Lanarkshire Area Autism Diagnostic Clinic for pre-school and school age children who may have autism or Asperger's syndrome.

The service has expanded recently and now takes referrals from both South and North Lanarkshire and the team work closely with health education and social support agencies.

Commenting on his visit Mr Macdonald said:

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to visit the children's services at the Cumbernauld Health Centre and see for myself the excellent work being carried out.

"I am particularly impressed by the quality and range of services that the centre offers for children with special needs and the support given to their families.

"The advantages of providing health care in the community are well recognised and were indeed highlighted in the Kerr Group's Report. This centre is an excellent model for multi disciplinary health care delivery and one of which NHS Lanarkshire can be justifiably proud."

The following clinics are provided from the Centre:

  • Lanarkshire Area Autism Diagnostic Clinic
  • Neurodisability Clinic
  • Child Development Clinic
  • Enuresis Clinic
  • Behaviour Management Clinic
  • Hospital Paediatric Out-patient Clinics
  • STEP Parenting Group Sessions

The child health services at the Central Health Centre are led by Dr Alison Kay, Associate Specialist in Community Paediatrics, supported by two staff grade doctors, a clinic nurse and a department secretary, with additional support from other health care professionals.
