Farm Borrowing
04/08/2005
Farm borrowing statistics based on information
collected from banks and mortgage companies operating in
Scotland are published today.
They show that at the end of May 2005 advances to the
Scottish agricultural industry were estimated to be £1,294
million. This is an increase in nominal terms of £11
million (0.9 per cent) on the 2004 figure.
After allowing for the effects of inflation in the year
to end May 2005, these figures represent an underlying
decrease in bank lending to Scottish farmers of 2.0 per
cent.
The figures include advances to agricultural contractors
and livestock salesmen. However, advances to farmers
account for 96.6 per cent of the total. Some 86.8 per cent
of the advances to agriculture are to owner occupiers.
