Borders Rail Bill

22/07/2005

The Waverley Rail Committee has today recommended the re-introduction of the Borders Rail-link to Galashiels and Tweedbank.

The Scottish Parliament Committee responsible for scrutinising the Private Bill to re-establish the Waverley Railway published its preliminary report today. The Bill now goes forward for Parliamentary debate.

Transport Minister Tavish Scott said:

"I am delighted that the Bill Committee have supported the proposed Waverley rail line. However, I am disappointed one committee member has reservations about aspects of the scheme. This is an important rail project which will increase economic opportunities, and improve quality of life for communities in both the Borders and Midlothian.

"This remains a matter that all members of the Scottish Parliament must decide on, and I would urge that they support this vital transport link for the people of the Borders at the parliamentary debate later this year."
