Funding for quarrying communities
22/07/2005
On-going quarrying activity will help to fund the
construction of an observatory to view merlin, short-eared
owls and other moorland bird species, it was announced
today.
The scheme in East Ayrshire is to receive funding from
the Community Environmental Renewal Scheme (CERS).
Deputy Environment Minister Rhona Brankin today
allocated £464,853 from the Community Environmental Renewal
Scheme (CERS) to 23 communities across Scotland. Grants
ranging from £1,700 to £33,581 will fund a variety of
projects to transform the environment in communities in the
vicinity of past or present quarrying.
Ms Brankin said:
"These grants demonstrate our commitment to delivering
improvements in, access to, and enjoyment of the
environment in all parts of Scotland. "It demonstrates that
former and current industrial activity can support and sit
side-by-side with environmental enhancements and access to
green spaces.
"Communities across Scotland have proposed these
projects in order to enhance their environment and quality
of life."
The scheme is being administered by Forward Scotland, on
behalf of the Executive, using funds from the Aggregates
Levy.
Communities in the Orkney Islands, the Highlands and the
Borders, among others, will receive funding.
The total amount allocated in this round of funding is
£464,853.
Forward Scotland is a charitable company set up to
promote sustainable development in Scotland through
supporting practical projects and influencing policy, and
has experience of operating grants schemes.
