Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority Appointments

Environment Minister, Rhona Brankin, today announced the
re-appointment of five members to the Loch Lomond and the
Trossachs National Park Authority.
The re-appointed members are:
Sir Peter Hutchison, from Stirlingshire is
Deputy Convenor of the Park Authority and former Chair of
the Loch Lomond and Trossachs Working Party and member of
the Loch Lomond and Trossachs Interim Committee. He is also
a former Chair of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the
Forestry Commission, and a former member of the Scottish
Tourist Board and British Waterways Board.
Ms Meriel Young, from Edinburgh has
experience working within the public and voluntary sectors,
and educational establishments. She has a background in
project management within outdoor recreation planning,
environmental education, urban forestry, community
participation, marketing, and transport policy.
Dr Bob Aitken, from Edinburgh is a
freelance research consultant, working in recreation,
tourism and countryside planning management. He is
currently a member of the National Access Forum, for which
he receives no remuneration.
Dr Janet Beveridge is a farmer and
qualified ecologist, with experience in community
environmental projects. Janet lives in the Gartocharn area,
on the boundary of the National Park.
Dr Patricia Bradley, from Glasgow is the
regional director for the South and West Scotland RSPB and
chair of the Nádair Trust for which she does not receive
remuneration. She is a member of the Central Scotland
Forestry Forum and officiates as honorary lecturer of the
University of Glasgow.
These re-appointments are for a second term of three
years and will run from July 8, 2005 to July 7, 2008.
All appointments are made on merit and political
activity plays no part in the selection process. However,
in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations,
there is a requirement for appointees' political activity
to be made public. While Dr Aitken has in the past
delivered leaflets for the Scottish Liberal Democratic
Party, no other re-appointed member declared political
activity.
This Ministerial public appointment was made in
accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in
Scotland's Code of Practice.
The posts are part-time and attract a remuneration of
£6426 for a time commitment of two or three days per month.
The five re-appointed board members do not hold other
public appointments.
The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park
Authority was Scotland's first National Park when it was
established on July 8, 2002.
The National Park's statutory aims are to:
- conserve and enhance the natural
and cultural heritage of the area
- promote sustainable use of the
natural resources of the area
- promote understanding and
enjoyment (including enjoyment in the form of
recreation) of the special qualities of the area by the
public
- promote sustainable economic and
social development of the area's communities
The National park Authority is an executive
Non-Departmental Public Body governed by a Board of 25
members, five of whom are directly elected by the
population within the Park boundary, 10 of whom are
directly appointed by Scottish Ministers and 10 of whom are
appointed by Scottish Ministers on the basis of
recommendations from local authorities within the Park
boundary.
