Sustaining Scotland's fishing industry

20/05/2005

Scotland's fishing industry is better placed to secure a sustainable future, Fisheries Minister Ross Finnie said today.

Mr Finnie was speaking on a visit to the Fishing 2005 Exhibition in Glasgow where he met with Scottish Fishermen's Federation (SFF) Chief Executive Bertie Armstrong.

Mr Finnie said:

"The Scottish Executive is working closely with fishing interests to build a sustainable, profitable and well managed industry.

"Part of that work includes the preparation of a Sea Fisheries Strategy which will address the challenges inherent in securing a healthy future for our fishing industry, the communities it supports and the marine environment on which it depends.

"Today's meeting continues the productive work we are doing with SFF in developing a strategy that will greatly enhance our ability to influence our discussions with European partners."

The strategy will be published within the next few months.
