Bute House reception

19/05/2005

First Minister Jack McConnell tonighty hosted a reception for football writers and broadcasters to consider the next steps in the national drive to end sectarianism.

At the event in Bute House, Mr McConnell said:

"Scotland needs to end sectarianism. It is a national drive, with a role for everyone.

"I have been greatly encouraged by the welcome that most people have given to this drive. Our football clubs in particular have already taken many positive steps forward.

"We must, however, do more. Scotland has the best fans of any national team in the world. If we can have that spirit amongst spectators at all grounds every week, we will enhance our reputation and be a better society too."

The recent summit on Sectarianism brought together over 30 separate organisations for the first time to discuss the problem. Those who attended included: government, councils, the police, sporting organisations, religious bodies, and anti-sectarianism organisations, among others.
